Earl Nottingham

Chief Photographer for Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE Magazine.

My passion is photographing the people, places and things of Texas. I'll keep doing it as long as there is light in the sky and in my eyes. Photographer at Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.

Produced photography for regional and national publications such at TEXAS HIGHWAYS and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER Magazines. Awarded Master of Photography degree by Professional Photographers of America.

My experience shooting for my high school newspaper and yearbook pretty much set me in motion for a career in photography and, upon graduating high school, attended the Art Institute of Atlanta's two-year photography program. After leaving Atlanta I thought I knew everything about photography and was hired as a photojournalist by my own hometown newspaper, the Temple Daily Telegram. It didn't take me long to realize that I wasn't cut out for a small town newspaper and I also realized that you don't go very far in the world without a four-year college degree. My next stop - and best decision I ever made was to study photography at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M at Commerce) which was ranked as one of the top photography schools in the country and gave me a solid foundation in several types of photography including portrait, commercial, photo-journalism and even cinematography.

Upon graduating ETSU I freelanced for 15 years, specializing in location portraiture and commercial work. It was during that time that I earned my PPA Master of Photography degree. On day however, purely by accident, I was looking through magazines at the local book store and was impressed by the images I saw in publications such as TEXAS HIGHWAYS, ARIZONA HIGHWAYS and TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE magazines. I decided at that point to gradually make a transition from the portrait work to the world of outdoor editorial photography. My first foot in the door and freelance assignment- came with TEXAS HIGHWAYS. I quickly added other outdoor magazines to my resume, including TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE.

Finally, in 1996, a staff position for Chief Photographer opened up with TEXAS PARKS & WILDLIFE Magazine and I was lucky enough to get it; largely in part to the past freelance work I had done for them. I'm also lucky to have been there ever since.

My program for the Houston group will be "Using the Camera as a Tool for Conservation". I will discuss the various types of photography I use on a daily basis to fulfill the needs of our magazine and agency and includes landscape, wildlife, commercial, portrait photography as well as video work. I label myself as a "generalist" photographer when it comes to defining what my specialty is. I will share some tips and technology during my visit with the group.
